Divorce
In Illinois, “Divorce” is known as a dissolution of marriage. In order for a case to be filed the spouses must meet certain separation requirements, which are currently a six month separation period. During dissolution proceedings the Court is empowered with dividing the assets and debts of the spouses to the proceedings. Additionally, if the spouses have children in common the court must address issues relating to how decisions will be made for the children moving forward and a parenting time schedule for when each one of the spouses will enjoy time with the children. The Court must also address issues of child support and potentially maintenance or spousal support, formerly known as alimony.
Going through dissolution proceedings can be extremely stressful. Knowing your rights, what to expect, and your options are imperative to reducing that stress moving forward with your life with a new family structure.
